De Evangelische Broeder Gemeente heeft in de loop der jaren verschillende zendingsposten in Suriname gevestigd. Heerendijk, gelegen aan de Commewijne rivier werd in 1840 ingericht. Vanuit deze post werden o.m. de plantages Brouwerslust, Hecht & Sterk, Kronenburg, Marienbosch, Schaapsstede, ‘t Vertrouwen en Zorg & Hoop bezocht. De resultaten van het zendingswerk, het verkondigen van het evangelie aan de bevolking die op de plantages werkten, werden in twee catalogi (doopboeken) vastgelegd. Deel A bevat gegevens over personen doe tussen 1828 en 1873 werden gedoopt. Deel B bestrijkt de periode 1873-1908. Beide delen tezamen vormen een onmisbaar naslagwerk voor geïnteresseerden in de zo boeiende geschiedenis van Suriname. Vooral mensen die zoeken naar hun vooroudergeschiedenis in Suriname zullen hier veel aan hebben.

Van Woensel writes that most plantation directors are ex-soldiers who have served in Suriname. These are, according to him, simple people with hardly any education and few skills. “The real centre point of the colony is the administrator who lives in the city and has sometimes twenty or thirty plantations under his management. Van Woensel writes about the Great Sunday; the day, once a year, on all plantations slaves receive a new garment and receive a hat. He calls this the plantation-fair; no work, but only drinking and dancing, one day a year. This dance is normally strictly prohibited.

Amsterdam, 1968, 1839, Facsimile edition of the original edition Bruxelles 1839. Folio: 40,5 x 31 cm, Hardcover (cloth). Lithographs. Conditie: Good, Minor discouloring; plates in perfect condition. Benoit was born in 1782 in Antwerp and died in Brussels in 1854. His stay in Surinam was a private enterprise, probably in 1831. Judging from the many journeys he made into the interior and the time he spent among the Indians and Bush negroes and in the town of Paramaribo, he must have stayed in Surinam for many months. He does not refrain from pointing out the many difficulties, dangers and privations he managed to overcome during that period. Benoit belonged to the opponents of the abolition of slavery. He cannot avoid picturing the harsh and cruel daily existence of the slaves and explaining why they run away, revolt against their masters and are filled with hatred towards the whites. When describing their dance-festivals, he says that the need to find an outlet for their misery accounts for the frenzy with which they throw themselves into it. with 50 lithograpic plates depicting 100 views in b/w.

Philip Fermin (1730-1813) was one of the most important chroniqeurs living in Surinam in second half of the 18th century. He lived eight years in Surinam. He was born in Berlin and moved with his family to Maastricht where he worked initially as a actor and later as a doctor. In 1754, he established himself at Paramaribo. Fermin wrote three books concerning Surinam. He describes the history of the colony Surinam, the runaway slaves, the flora and fauna, the governing board of the colony, the cultivation of plants and everyday life in Paramaribo. He also gives us a vast overview of all plantations and their owners. Fermin learned much of the slaves concerning kruiden and the preparation of food. In this book he also wrote concerning the misgovernment and other reason for the decline of the colony..

August Kappler (Mannheim 1815 – Stuttgart 1887) was one of the many German adventurers who landed inSuriname. Kappler spent a total of 43 years of his life in Suriname. In 1836 he arrived as a soldier in Suriname. He was stationed at various corners of the colony. That enabled him to see much of the country and study the people and nature. He regularly visited plantations and studied the customs and rituals of the slave population. Over his first six years he kept a diary that resulted in this publication.

De studie bevat niet alleen registraties en conclusies betreffende de beroerde omstandigheden waaronder de contractarbeiders moesten werken en leven, maar ook een 458 pagina’s tellende bijlage met een keur aan persoonlijke gegevens over meer dan 2500 bestudeerde individuele contractarbeiders. Naast namen en leeftijd moet men daarbij denken aan gegevens zoals beroep, verwantschap, religie, plaats van herkomst (vaak Berbice of Barbados), plaats en datum van afreis, aanbrenger (ronselaar), naam schip, plaats en naam werkgever, start- en einddatum contract en ‘veranderingen en bewegingen’ (opmerkingenveld). Kortom een rijke bron voor onderzoekers met contractarbeiders als voorouders. .
